Inspect tires before you drive the kids to school

Families across the nation said goodbye to summer vacation with Labor Day celebrations last weekend. Now it's time for many parents to pack lunches, make sure their kids did their homework and drive them to school. Since this is a daily occurrence for many parents, it's important to make sure their cars are safe and running well, and tire health is a big part of that.

CBS News recommends that drivers should check their air pressure as the proper levels can not only improve fuel efficiency, but they can also provide better traction on the road. Drivers are urged to check the owner's manual or the sticker on the inside of the door panel to determine the appropriate pressure. There is often a pressure label on the tires themselves, but this is generally the maximum pressure that they can handle, and should not be what drivers aim for.

Visual inspections can help drivers catch punctures and other signs of damage early enough that they might be able to repair the tires and avoid having to replace them, which can be expensive. An extended warranty can help cover the cost of repairs, maintenance and tire alignments.

Getting your tires aligned and balanced can make them last longer and reduce the amount of road vibration, which can cause driver fatigue, according to Goodyear Tires. Foregoing this simple procedure can cause unnecessary damage to a vehicle's suspension as well.
