High gas prices have turned more than a few drivers into hit-and-run fuel thieves, but a new payment system may help to reduce the rate of drivers who leave the gas station without paying. In states where drivers can pump their own gas, many stations offer the option of filling up and then heading inside to pay the clerk, but this encourages some to simple fill-up and take off.
Some businesses have attempted to curtail this illegal behavior by requiring customers to pre-pay with a credit card or cash before the gas starts flowing. However, this can be an inconvenience if, for example, a driver pays for $40 of gas, but only uses $34.50 to fill their tank.
According to Consumer Reports, one gas station in Saginaw, MIchigan, is trying out a new technology to eliminate the need for customers to prepay while at the same time reducing the likelihood of gas-theft. The system requires drivers who want to pay at the end to swipe their licenses. This way, if they drive off before settling their bill, the license information will be forwarded to the police.
Drivers who want to save money at the pump don't need to steal to do it. Instead they can get regular maintenance and oil changes to ensure their vehicles are running efficiently. They can also purchase an extended warranty which can cover the cost of repairs and save drivers even more.
