Most Volt owners not worried about battery fires

Few Chevy Volt owners are worried about the recent issues discovered with the car's battery. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently reported that a battery, which had been damaged during crash safety testing, caught fire a few weeks later.

This spurred the agency to launch a full-scale investigation into the matter, and when the possible danger was revealed, General Motors was quick to offer loaner vehicles to Volt owners. While the NHTSA's testing fire is the only reported incident of its kind, GM is allowing any Volt drivers who are worried about the issue to take a loaner car free-of-charge during the investigation.

The Wall Street Journal reports that only a small portion of the 6,000 Volt owners who were given the opportunity took GM up on the offer. This indicates that drivers are confident in their vehicles, but accidents can still happen. Drivers of any type of car may want to consider buying car warranties that can cover the cost of repairs should they experience a mechanical failure.
