Traveling with pets this holiday season

We all know how difficult it can be to leave our pets at home this season.

If you plan on traveling with your furry family members this season, keep in mind the different options you have for how to keep them comfortable and safe.

“For many pet parents, a trip’s not enjoyable if the four-legged members of the family aren’t invited,” said Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, Executive Vice President of ASPCA Programs and Science Advisor. “But traveling can be highly stressful, both for you and your animal companions. With thoughtful preparation, you can ensure a safe and comfortable trip for everyone.”

Plane - For safe air travel with your pet:

  • Always have your pet wear a collar and an ID tag that clearly states an address or cell phone number where you can be reached in case of emergency.
  • Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate— it should be large enough for your pet to comfortably stand, sit and turn around in. Crates may be purchased at pet supply stores. Also, writing “Live Animal” in large letters on the crate and using arrows to indicate the upright position of the crate, will ensure the proper treatment of the animal.
  • Booking a direct flight whenever possible may decrease your pet’s chances of being left on a tarmac. Informing all airline personal that you are traveling with a pet in the cargo hold will make the process easier if any additional attention is needed.

Vehicle - For safe car travel with your pet:

  • Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. Much like on the airplane, you will want to make sure the crate is large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. If your dog rides outside of the carrier, secure them with a harness in case of sudden stops or changes in direction. Cats should always be in a carrier.
  • Animals should never be left alone in a parked vehicle! Even with the windows open on a hot summer day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time. In the winter a car can hold in the cold and cause the animal to freeze to death.
  • A wise investment is making sure your pet has an ID collar with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number, and any other relevant contact information. In case of emergency, an ID collar can ensure your pets safety.
