Honda offering Extended Warranties for gas tank leaks

Honda offers extended warranty to Civic owners for issue with gas tank leaks

80,000 car owners offered extended warranties

Honda will be offering an extended warranty for roughly 80,000 owners of Honda Civics from

the 2006 to 2011 model years. The New York Times reports that this move is the Japanese automaker's response to an issue with certain fuel tanks that may cause them to develop cracks and leaks. However, Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, claims that the cracks do not form near any ignition source.

"The potential fuel leakage is very small from the top area of the tank where the fuel filler meets the tank," Martin wrote in an email, according to the Times.

Typically, fuel leaks will result in a recall, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is keeping an eye on the situation to determine if a full-scale investigation is needed.

Drivers of other vehicles that are no longer covered by their factory warranty can consider purchasing extended car warranties that will cover the cost of any necessary repairs and maintenance for certain parts. This can also encourage them to address issues as they crop up instead of delaying services to save money, which can increase the risk of crashes.
