Ford and Google are working together to develop smarter car technology.

As technology becomes integrated with nearly every aspect of life, car companies are stepping up their game. Many new vehicles come with hands-free navigation systems and phone-compatible technology that allows drivers to make phone calls without taking their hands or eyes from the road.

Mercury News reports that Google has partnered with Ford to develop new technology that would provide new vehicles with the ability to anticipate traffic jams and provide alternate routes, which researchers tell the news source will not be available until at least 2020.

“Until now, empowering cars has not been as big an effort as empowering the driver,” Johannes Kristinsson, a system architect at Ford who is working on the technology, told the news source. “We want to empower the cars and make that a better experience for you as a driver.”

Ford’s current Sync technology keeps tabs on the mechanical state of vehicles and reminds drivers when it is time to get regular maintenance, according to the Denver Post. The car can tell you when it needs to get a checkup and an extended warranty can help you save money when it comes time to pay the mechanic. Other carmakers offer similar electronic equipment on their newer models as well.
