Toyota recalls far outweigh others in 2011

When a mistake is made during auto manufacturing, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires car companies to issues recalls and correct the problem. This year, nearly every major automaker was involved in a recall, but Toyota stood out among the crowd. For the third year in a row, the Japanese company had more recalls than any other – 13 separate instances that affected more than 3.5 million vehicles, according to Ward's Auto.

The news source analyzed federal data and found that throughout 2011, there were 130 recalls for more than 11 million vehicles. Toyota may have had the worst overall score, but a few others gave them a run for their money. Ford came close to Toyota in volume, with 3.2 million cares and light trucks, but for only 10 recalls. General Motors far outdid the Japanese company with 21 recalls. However, less than 500,000 GM units were affected.

When a company issues a recall, the problem is fixed for free. Otherwise drivers must pay for repairs themselves. A recent AAA survey found that many drivers put off getting repairs because of the cost, but an extended warranty can cover the expenses so motorists can keep their cars in good condition.
