Avoid stopping on highways for safety's sake

Sometimes, when a vehicle stops on the side of the highway, other drivers slow down to 'rubberneck' and cause traffic jams, but other times, motorists pay no mind and race past the disabled car. This can be extraordinarily dangerous as vehicles travel much faster on highways than they do on city streets.

"It's hard to imagine and comprehend how fast those cars are going until you're actually standing there hearing them," Lieutenant Scott Harrington, the spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol in Topeka, told The Washington Post. "[Other drivers] are not paying attention to you – they don't even move over."

Law enforcement officials, AAA and tow truck companies recommend that drivers should make every effort to get their cars off the highway when possible, even if they experience a flat tire. A number of tow truck drivers are killed on the job each year because there simply isn't enough room for them to work on highways.

If you can't make it to an exit and need to stop, the news source recommends pulling over as far as possible onto the shoulder and even onto the grass if you can.

You can lower the risk of a highway breakdown by getting regular maintenance and monitoring your vehicle's tire pressure. An extended warranty can help cover some of the cost of tune-ups and repairs.
