NHTSA study finds many drivers still text behind the wheel

Texting while driving is one of the many forms of distracted driving, and can increase the risk of an accident. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that about 20 percent of all car crashes in 2009 were caused by distracted driving behaviors, such as texting, changing the radio and talking on the phone or to passengers.

Many states have passed laws to prevent drivers from engaging in these behaviors, but a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that more than half of drivers are still texting on the road. The survey also showed that most drivers who admit to texting while driving do not consider their own behavior to be risky, but disapprove of others doing the same.

Even motorists who do not engage in distracted driving practices are still at risk of getting involved in accidents, which is why it may be a good idea to consider an extended warranty. This way, the cost of repairs of will be covered should an accident occur.
