Volkswagen to recall 168,000 vehicles

In the past few days, rumors were cropping up about the possibility of a Volkswagen recall, and today the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the official announcement. The German automaker will be recalling more than 168,000 Golf, Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen vehicles that were produced between May 2008 and September 2011. Some Audi A3 units may be affected as well, according to The Associated Press.
The issue lies in the fuel injection system, which could crack and cause fuel leaks that may lead to car fires. Essentially, the engine's vibrations are weakening the injector lines, causing them to crack and leak. The news source reports that of the complaints it received, none indicated that there were any fires.
Volkswagen will install dampers on all affected models and replace fuel injector lines as needed, free-of-charge to the vehicle owners. For any other mechanical problems, drivers may want to consider purchasing car warranties, which can cover the cost of repairs, and even one major repair can recover the money spent on the warranty.
