Hyundai Elantra named 2012 North American Car of the Year

The 2012 North American International Motor Show is in full swing in Detroit, and one of the highlights of the event thus far was the announcement of the 2012 North American Car of the Year. This year, the honor went to the 2012 Hyundai Elantra, marking the second time the South Korean automaker has taken the prize in the 19 years since the awards were established.

"Elantra speaks to the success of our recipe of bold design and great fuel economy," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America's president and CEO. "In a year with some truly breakthrough competitors, we are honored that the jury recognizes Elantra's far-reaching impact on the industry."

A panel of 50 independent automotive journalists narrowed down their selection from more than 50 different makes and models to three finalists – the Volkswagen Passat, Ford Focus and the Elantra. The winner was chosen based on its innovation, industry impact, safety, handling, design value and satisfaction. J.D. Power and Associates rated the 2012 Elantra number one in customer satisfaction. This, along with an impressive 33 mile-per-gallon combined fuel economy, an aerodynamic design and record annual sales, made the Elantra a clear winner.

Drivers who are not yet ready to trade in their current vehicles can invest in car warranties to keep their rides running smoothly and help them save money when it comes time to get a new car, like the award-winning Elantra.
