Now is the time to think about winterizing vehicles

October is Fall Car Care Month, and while it serves as a reminder for drivers to keep up with their regular maintenance, it also makes for the prefect time to think about getting your vehicle ready for winter.

"A thorough inspection on your vehicle this month will go a long way toward ensuring safety and dependability when temperatures drop and wet winter weather strikes," Rich White, the executive director of the Car Care Council, told The Northern Light. "A routine maintenance program also makes financial sense, extending useful vehicle life and helping avoid costly repairs down the road."

There are a number of things that should be inspected regularly, including hose and belt conditions and the exhaust system. Drivers should also have all of their fluids changed, or at least inspected, before winter to ensure that the engine does not overheat and that it is properly lubricated. They should also check tire pressure and tread thickness, and in areas that typically have harsh, snowy winters, drivers may want to consider putting snow tires on their cars until spring.

A vehicle warranty can cover the cost or maintenance and any necessary repairs, which will give drivers extra money to buy a warm winter jacket or save up for a ski trip.
