Study: Fuel economy of newly purchased cars continues to improve

Researchers from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute recently released the results of a study, which reveal that the average fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles is continuing to improve. In fact, the average across light-duty automobiles produced in the 2012 model year is about 21.5 miles per gallon, a 14 percent improvement over the 18.9 mpg average in 2008.

"This implies that consumers tend to choose vehicle models with better fuel economy than the average of all vehicles available," said study author Brandon Schoettle. "The recent economic downturn, coupled with rising gas prices, has led to an increased interest in purchasing more fuel-efficient vehicles."

Drivers who may not be ready to purchase new vehicles can take steps to improve their current cars' fuel efficiency. Removing excess weight from the car is a good place to start, as lighter vehicles use less fuel to propel themselves forward. Keeping an eye on air pressure in the tires is another effective strategy at sustaining and improving gas usage. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that the right tire pressure can improve fuel economy by as much as 3.3 percent.

Regular maintenance is another key ingredient in getting the most of every drop of fuel. Trips to the mechanic can be expensive, especially when major repairs are needed, but an extended auto warranty can cover the cost.
