What causes check engine lights to turn on?

Sometimes a check engine light will turn on for no reason at all, and many drivers choose to assume that this is the most probable cause of its illumination. However, the light may indicate a real problem, so it is important for drivers to find out what's going on.

The easiest, and one of the most probable reasons that the light has come on is that the gas cap is loose. All you need to do is pop open the door and try to wiggle the cap. Tighten it if it moves at all and continue driving. If this was the source of the problem, it should shut off after driving a few miles.

CarMD.com recently conducted a report that highlights the top causes of an illuminated check engine light, and last year, O2 sensors bumped loose gas caps out of the number one spot that they had held since 1996. The O2 sensor regulates the amount of oxygen that enters the engine to ensure that the proper mixture of fuel and air enters the combustion chamber. If it is faulty, the engine will not perform as well, and you will likely use more gas than you need to.

An extended car warranty can cover the cost of any repairs or other fees that may be incurred when you take your car to the mechanic.
