BMW offers text-to-speech app to reduce distractions on the road

BMW's ConnectedDrive application allows drivers to access their phones without taking their eyes off the road or their hands off the wheel. The app requires drivers to press play, and then it will read out emails, text messages and status updates from sites like Facebook and Twitter, so people can stay on top of the latest developments with their friends, family and the world. The text-to-speech technology, implemented by Nuance Communications, has a natural and realistic speaking voice and is available in 14 different languages.

"Mobile consumers crave constant contact, and often find that they're immediately disconnected as soon as they enter their car," said Arnd Weil, the general manager and vice president at Nuance Automotive. "Drivers are demanding in-car systems and mobile apps that not only keep them connected, but also minimize manual and visual distractions."

The app also enables drivers to listen to appointments they they have programmed into their iPhone calendars and can stream internet radio directly, eliminating the need to pick up the phone and switch apps.

This app and other technology can help to reduce the rate of distracted driving, which was involved in 20 percent of car accidents in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you do get into an accident, whatever the cause, an extended warranty can cover the cost of any repairs.
